The massive cathedral of Florence is one of the most important architectural works of the period between the Gothic and the Renaissance , and one of the largest and most beautiful cathedrals of Europe , at the time the largest, now the third largest after San Pietro in Rome and St. Paul in London. It was begun, by order of the Signoria in 1296 by the architect Arnolfo di Cambio in the site of the ancient cathedral of Santa Reparata.
